G.C.S.E. pupils consistently achieve 100% exam pass rate at A-C.

In recent years six of our pupils have achieved 100% in their G.C.S.E with many more achieving the A* grade.  Pupils are encouraged to take part in numerous events and competitions.

They compete annually in the Credit Union competition achieving monetary awards at both local and chapter levels.  They have attained National level consecutively for the past eleven years having won it outright in 2000.

We have worked with many schools North and South in completing cross community projects.  While creating a ‘Jigsaw for peace’ we met with President Clinton and led talks at Stormont Castle.

Recently we completed kite designs in conjunction with St. Claires in Manorhamilton to highlight the plight of the golden eagle.

We have worked with St. Mogues, Bawnboy along with ceramic artist Cathy Carmen to make unique vessels.

This year we worked with Cork artist Declan O Mahony, one of the artists shortlisted to create work for the new acute hospital. He worked with year 9 pupils to create our own artwork for the new hospital.

A Year 11 group against stiff opposition won the Millennium Mural Competition sponsored by the Erneside Shopping Centre.  The adjudicator Mr Brian McClelland, Head of Faculty of Art and Design in the University of Ulster rated St. Mary’s entry as “the most commendable due to its vitality and sense of optimism”. The mural is a permanent feature of  Erneside Shopping Centre.

The Department was involved in the creation of the Lough Mac Nean Sculpture Trail programme, a North-South venture.  The resulting work can be viewed at the Blacklion swimsite.

The school was delighted when Edward McGonigle, past pupil, won a major award in London against 52,000 other competitors.  His talent earned him a trip to the Tate Modern.

To encourage their environmental awareness, pupils are encouraged to participate  annually in a recycled competition.  Students create very imaginative art and design forms from scrap materials. This work is now overflowing out onto the school walls creating permanent artworks to adorn the school environment.

Holocaust Commemoration Memorial

Year 10 pupils worked with artist Patricia Martinelli and poet Seamus McCeannaigh to create artwork and poetry for this event.  These were displayed in Enniskillen Castle as part of the Holocaust Memorial Commemoration.  Students had their work selected to use as posters to advertise this event across the province.  Students actively participated on the day reading their poetry to a large gathering including the Minister for Children Lord Rooker and the Council Chairman Stephen Hugget.

Translink Ulster in Bloom

Students are encouraged to examine a particular artist or group of artists and then view their own surroundings in that style.  We have been successful annually with Dineka Maguire taking first prize in 2009.  The prize was the use of Ulsterbus for a day. Year 11 and Year 12 Art students enjoyed a trip to the Ulster Museum in October 2009 to view the Sean Scully Exhibition.

True Colours Exhibition

Examination moderators have been constantly impressed with the high standard of examination entry at our school. Work has been selected on many occasions for the True Colours exhibition in Omagh, a showcase for top examination entries.

Carrickfergus Castle History/Art Project

Year 8 pupils participate annually in this competition.  After a visit to the castle the pupils formulate entries in Art short story and poetry.  In 2006 pupils won the award for best school entry in the Art category.  The work of Megan Cassidy adorns the cover of a booklet sent to all schools in Northern Ireland.  In 2008 pupils won the overall school prize for short story.

GCSE pupils are treated annually to a visit by renowned animal sculptor Anthony Scott.  His annual demonstration assists them greatly to develop their three dimensional  Fine Art Unit on the animal form.

After visiting the school of Engineering in September 2008 at Queens University  Year 10 pupils created a piece of Kinetic Art and onreturning to display their work were highly commended.
